Special techniques

Violin

Pinhole

This is what got me started with pinhole.
My father, a histologist, is crazy about violins. For a book he was writing about the acoustics of stringed instruments he asked me to make an impossible photo: the bass bar and sound post inside a violin. And the label. That was only possible with pinhole technique.
The photo of the bass bar and sound post: I mounted a metal cover of a ballpoint pen with a small hole in its small end into a thin metal plate at the front on the front plate of my technical camera.

I took the photo through the hole.
In order to get enough light I flashed for an hour through the f-holes with studio flashes.
The label: this was glued onto the inside of the backboard of the violin.

I photographed through an f-hole from left to right with a 35 mm digital pinhole camera.
You flash through one f-hole and photograph through the other. I then photoshopped the twenty photos together.
